WHAT MONTH AND YEAR WAS your BABY BORN?

Why did you choose to use a surrogate?

Medical Issues

How was meeting your surrogate?

Our meeting with our surrogate was informative and comfortable. Both Jennifer and our coordinator, Danielle, were there which helped to break the ice. Meeting a surrogate for the first time can be a little nerve-wracking, but Jennifer asked all the right questions and smoothly and confidently led us right through the whole process. After her questions, IPs and surrogate had a chance to ask our own questions of each other.

What was the best part of the process?

The best part of the process was each time we got a little more good news from our surrogate or Danielle (positive pregnancy test, passing important milestones via ultrasound imaging, etc), and then a little more good news, until the best good news of all — the delivery of our healthy full-term baby. Other than that, we had really great support from our coordinator, Danielle. She frequently checked in on us and made sure everything was going okay. If we had any questions or concerns, she was right there to address them. She provided all of the info we needed at exactly the right times.

Which was your favorite moment during the process?

My favorite moment was when our surrogate and her husband walked us out of the hospital when we were discharged with our baby. It was the culmination of everything we had been working towards for years, and the end of our surrogate's very last journey (she had had several before ours). It just felt right to all walk out together.

Why did you choose to work with an Agency, particularly Bright Futures Families?

We felt that working with an agency was more of a sure thing, they have lots of experience making sure each side, IPs and surrogates, feel like their interests are taken into account and protected. When we met with Jennifer the first time, we felt that she had a deep understanding of the surrogacy world, and of IPs in general. She and her sister have a podcast that we had listened to for a while before working with BFF, and we liked that BFF was so engaged at the level of communication and education to have started something like that.

What was it like when you got to see and hold your baby for the first time?

It was an out of body experience to see and hold our baby for the first time. It was something we had been hoping and trying for for many years, and we were finally able to do it. There are no words to describe it.

What advice would you give to other Intended Parents?

Do lots of research before choosing an agency. Go with your gut feelings, they're often correct. Not everything will go smoothly, it's just the nature of such a logistically and emotionally complex journey, so be prepared for bumps along the way. A good agency should be able to help with anything that might come up that needs addressing. It can be an emotionally difficult process, so make sure you have a good support team in place.
